This is a question I have been asking myself for a long time: Do I do things I don’t want to do? If I had the money, would I still do what I do?
These are profound questions. Sometimes we know the answer, but we don’t know what to do. Money and finances have become an essential part of our being. We measure our success, respect, and place in society by acquiring more and more money. We are made to work for a system that encourages us to work really hard so we can retire with enough money to build our houses and cover medical and health expenses in old age. People who are financially poor are considered failures, and we largely want to avoid failing in our lives.
Thus, we work. We work because everyone around us is working, and a lot of us don’t do what we like either, so why would that matter so much? We are made to choose our educational path based on what brings the most financial success. Arts and other passion-driven professions are usually not considered good choices, and people who are able to suppress their inner voices for more financially rewarding work are often considered mature and are viewed as role models by friends, family, and society.
So, you naturally are left wondering what to do. If you are at this spot in your life, it’s generally where I am as well. If you are thinking about this, you are not alone, nor is there anything wrong with you. I have been finding incredible stories from all over the world where people have successfully made a transition to a life they feel is worth living. One thing that can be super useful is finding people who are going through a similar phase or have already done it; being around such people can help a lot.
