The person and practice behind Commune
Commune is led by Usama Ahmed, a designer, researcher and builder exploring more practical ways to live, make homes and work together. The work is rooted in Pakistan and connected to a wider international community.
It began with a personal question: how might we build a meaningful life without treating land, people or resources as disposable? That question has led Usama into natural building, food systems, community learning, creative work and the small experiments that make a different future feel possible.
This is not presented as finished expertise. Commune is a place to study, test, make and share what works with others. The site gathers that learning in public.
Work in progress
Usama’s work has focused on low-cost, climate-conscious housing and the systems that help communities build and maintain it. This includes research into mud and compressed-earth construction, locally made tools, post-flood rehabilitation, training and accessible models of housing.
Through the RIZQ Housing Innovation Lab model, the work connects affordable housing prototypes with community training, livelihoods, research partnerships and scalable approaches for different needs. It is informed by the work of people such as Yasmeen Lari, Laurie Baker and Shahid Khan, and by a belief that local material knowledge deserves serious attention.
Commune also develops learning around shelter and the environment with young people, because the habits and questions formed early can shape the institutions they later lead.

Commune is most useful where people are ready to take the long view: a school exploring an environmental learning programme, a nonprofit improving housing after a crisis, an architect or researcher developing an appropriate material system, or a community organisation looking for practical collaboration.
